Chaps fight, fall short

Freshman Donnell Fraley scored a season-high 26 points for the College of DuPage, which rallied late in its 85-80 loss at Madison College on Saturday in N4C play.

It marked the fifth time in the last six games that Fraley scored in double figures for the Chaparrals, who dropped to 4-19 overall and 3-9 in the N4C.

The Chaparrals twice led in the first half, but the host WolfPack scored six straight points late in the opening half and led 41-37 at the break.

Madison led by as many as 19 points in the second half before the Chaps rallied. A pair of Davion Washington free throws put Madison ahead 82-71 with 2:17 left.

That's when the Chaps dug deep and made the WolfPack worry. A 9-2 run, capped by David Spell's 3-pointer, brought the Chaps to within four points (84-80) with 40 seconds left. But it was a little too late as Madison held on for the win.

"Our effort was there this afternoon,'' Chaps coach William Anderson said. "To get back in the game after nearly trailing by 20 in the second says a lot about the guys.''

The game was COD's fourth in eight days.

Spell scored 16 points and Jason Peace added 12 for the Chaps, who make their season home finale Wednesday night against Joliet College. The Chaps will honor Peace, Franklin Montgomery and Spell, who play their final home game, in a pregame ceremony.
