Season resumes

After a 16-day layoff due to unseasonable weather, the Chaparrals resumed their season Sunday with a split against College of Lake County, losing the opener 3-2 and winning the second, 3-1.

The Chaps, now 7-7 overall, begin a busy week Tuesday when they play host to Waubonsee College at COD. They are scheduled to play eight games in a six-game span when they begin against the Chiefs.

Game 1: Lake County 3, Chaparrals 2
One rough inning cost Nick Shelton and the Chaparrals when the hosts scored third runs in the third and that was enough to hold on.

Rocky Pascente gave the Chaps a one-run lead in the third with his double that scored Conor Fitzgerald. Anthony Fumagalli drove in the other run, a single in the sixth that scored Cam Steffens.

Shelton went the distance, striking out five and allowing three walks. Only one run was earned.

Steffens and Corey Vondra each had two hits. Steven Salvino joined Pascente with a double.

Game 2: Chaparrals 3, Lake County 1
Jonny Vesevick went the distance for the Chaps, throwing a two-hitter with six strikeouts. He did not issue a walk.

The Chaps totaled eight hits — all singles. Jack Oberli gave the Chaps the lead in the second on a two-out single to left that scored Isaac Bracher. In the sixth, COD scored a pair of runs on a bases-loaded hit by pitch to Fumagalli that scored Sherman Martin. Kyle Ferguson then scored on a wild pitch.

Oberli and Bracher each had two hits.
