Daylight conquers Chaps

College of DuPage took advantage of 70-degree temperatures Thursday in Galesburg, but fell short of the victory column against Carl Sandburg College. The Chaps lost 11-10 in the opener and earned a 2-2 tie in the ninth when the game was called due to darkness.
 
The Chaps, now 9-10-1 overall, are off until Sunday when they play at Triton College in a nonconference doubleheader. First pitch is at noon.
 
Game 1: Carl Sandburg 11, Chaps 10
The host Chargers gained control with a five-run sixth inning and held off the Chaps for the win.
 
The Chaps broke a 6-6 tie with two runs in their half of the sixth, taking advantage with a two-hit, two-error inning. However, the lead was short-lived when the Chargers countered by scoring five runs on five hits with three COD errors .
 
Sherman Martin connected on a two-run home run in the third that capped a three-run inning.
 
Anthony Fumagalli went 3-for-5, thanks to a triple and a double, with two RBI and three runs scored, while Conor Fitzgerald and Simon Marinelli each had two hits.
 
Game 2: Carl Sandburg 2, Chaps 2 9 innings
The teams combined for 33 strikeouts and the Chaps stranded 13 runners on base.
 
Dan Opem accounted for the Chaps' runs on his two-run single in the second. He finished 2-for-3 and drew a walk.
 
Starter Matt Anderson had five strikeouts in three innings, while Nick Shelton struck out four in his two innings. Jonny Vesevick struck out two and T.J. Jaros threw three innings of no-hit relief with three strikeouts.
