Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Mark Reinhiller, Sports Information Coordinator

Hines delivers at the buzzer

Sophomore guard Khyre Hines was the man of the hour Saturday. More accurately, he was the man at the buzzer.

Hines' 3-point attempt with no time left ripped through the net and gave the Chaparrals a 75-72 win over visiting Joliet Junior College in N4C men's play.

The win was the Chaparrals' third straight and first at home since Dec. 19. They take a 5-15 overall record and 3-3 N4C slate into Wednesday's game at Rock Valley to complete the first round of conference play.

COD had possession of the ball with 7.8 seconds to go. The Chaps took two timeouts before they got the play underway.

Guard Patrick Shaughnessy inbounded the ball near the Chaps' basket and found Latron Kirkwood in the left wing. He then drilled a pass to Hines, who had an open look on the right side about 20 feet in front of the Chaps' bench. He lifted the shot just before the buzzer and the ball found nothing but net.

Hines finished with 12 points as six Chaps scored in double figures. Kirkwood led with 14, followed by Hines and Austin Esterly with 12. Abram Ross scored 11 and Joe Bell and Shaughnessy each had 10.

The Chaps shot 50 percent from the floor on 33 of 66 shots. They distributed the ball well with 21 assists, led by Ross with seven. Defensively, they turned the ball just seven times in a well-played game on both ends of the court.

Evan Wagner-Talley, who scored just six points, led the Chaps in rebounds with 11. Each team had 35 boards.
