Split Sunday at Carl Sandburg

Nick Fushi set the tone for the Chaps' bats in the first inning, delivering a grand slam as the team went on to a 15-4 victory in Sunday's opener at Carl Sandburg College in Region 4 baseball.

Nolan Pomatto added a three-run homer in the seventh as the Chaps totaled 10 hits against the Chargers.

Cliff Vickers and Cam Bailey each had two hits, while Vickers and Gabe Pulido totaled two RBI apiece.

On the mound, Nick Stacey controlled the Chargers over six innings. He allowed seven hits, struck out eight and gave up three runs — all earned. Joey Simon and Ben Steiner each had one strikeout in their relief efforts.

In game two, Seth Borden connected on his team-leading seventh home run, but the Chaps struck out 12 times against the Chargers' Silas Israel in an 8-5 loss.

Dan Gusel and Pomatto each had an RBI, but no other Chap had an extra-base hit.

Starter Mike Sullivan had six strikeouts, but walked five and gave up five earned runs.

The Chaps, now 5-8 overall, are at College of Lake County on Wednesday.
