Chaps pound Harper

The Chaparrals left no doubt that their six-game losing streak would end Saturday after dealing host Harper College a 15-2 and 26-1 sweep in N4C and Region 4 baseball.
 
A total of seven home runs on the day by the Chaps, led by Dan Gusel's two in the second game, laid the ground work in the sweep. The Chaps, now 7-13 overall, return home Tuesday when they play Harper in a nonconference doubleheader First pitch is 1:30 p.m.
 
Game 1: Chaparrals 15, Harper 2 5 innings
  • LHP Frankie Klemm struck out 10, issued two walks and gave up just three hits
  • Seth Borden connected on his eighth HR on the season with a solo shot in the fourth
  • Cliff Vickers went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and a two-run triple
  • Jack Oberli homered in the second
  • Borden was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a triple in addition to his HR
  • Cam Bailey was 2-for-3 that included a two-run triple
  • Steven Salvino added a run-scoring double in the second
 
Game 2: Chaparrals 26, Harper 1 5 innings
  • Gusel finished the day with 3-for-4, with a three-run homer and a solo shot, and five RBI
  • In just his third at-bat of the season, Daniel Rueth connected on a three-run HR
  • Nolan Pomatto hit a grand slam in the second, giving the Chaps a 13-1 lead
  • Danny Holloway was 3-for-4 with four RBI
  • Mike Wagner had a multiple-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a two-run double
  • RHP Mike Sullivan struck out eight in four innings for the win
  • Reliever Nick Stacey had two K's in his one inning
