Chaps finish sixth at NJCAA tourney

Ashley Eiermann hit a grand slam and drove in six runs, but Rowan College South Jersey – Gloucester overcame a six-run deficit and handed the Chaparrals a 12-11 loss in elimination play during the NJCAA Division III national championship Friday.

The Chaps concluded the tournament with a sixth-place finish after losing to North Dakota Science 7-6. COD, which was seeded sixth, finished the season 19-20 and represented well at the national tournament. Though they finished 1-3, the Chaps' three losses were by a combined four runs.

Rowan College South Jersey – Gloucester 12, Chaparrals 11
The Chaps struck early with a 4-0 lead, thanks to Nicole Brace's two-run single in the first and Eiermann's two-run double in the second. After Amber Dasenbrock's infield error, the Chaps led 5-0.

Eiermann pushed the Chaps' lead to 9-3 on the slam in the fourth, and Sydney Sturino and Paige Jahaske added RBI in the fifth. But the Roadrunners crept back into the game. They scored five runs in the third, then added runs in each of the final three innings for the win.

Both Eiermann and Kelsey Warren had three hits. Brace and Gianna Maida each had two hits.

The Chaps led late – 5-3 in the fifth and 6-5 in the sixth, but the Wildcats pushed two across in the sixth and held on for the win.

A pair of unearned runs early gave the Chaps a 2-1 lead. Dasenbrock keyed a three-run fifth, thanks to her two-run triple. Brace's RBI-single in the sixth gave the Chaps a 6-5 lead.

Vincenza Zaccaro joined Dasenbrock in extra-base hits with a double. Warren was the only Chaps with more than one hit.

Congrats Kelsey!
Freshman SS Kelsey Warren was selected to the all-tournament team. She went 8-for-17 (.471) with one double. She drew one walk and scored five runs in the Chaps' four games.
