Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Mark Reinhiller, Sports Information Coordinator

Second-half spree falls short

Donnell Fraley led five Chaparrals in double figures with 18 points, but visiting Malcolm X found a way to hold off and win 78-75 in Region 4 men's basketball Tuesday night.

Kaashif Malik followed with 16 points and Amaris Hughes added 12 including a 10-for-10 effort at the free throw line but it wasn't enough as the Chaps dropped their fifth straight and take a 4-9 record into Saturday's home game against Prairie State.

Trailing 56-45 with 13:52 to go, the Chaps forged back into the game on a 10-0 run, thanks to a pair of 3-pointers from Levi Bentsen, who finished with 11 points.

A pair of Fraley free throws tied the game at 71 with 1:35 to go, but a pair of turnovers from the Chaps allowed the Hawks to go up 75-71 with five seconds left.

A free throw from John Young extended the Hawks' lead to 76-71, but the Hughes went to the line twice — once for a two-shot foul and another for a technical foul called on Malcolm X's bench. He hit all four shots and pulled the Chaps to within a point of the lead at 76-75 with time running out.

On the Hawks' inbounds play, the Chaps were called for a foul and DeKwan Turner hit both free throws for the final margin. A Bentsen 3-pointer was off to end the game.

The Chaps scored all five of their 3-pointers in the second half and they finished 16 of 19 from the line.

Young scored a game-high 25 for the Hawks.
