Becoming the Region 4 baseball champions did not quite work out for the Chaparrals, who fell short Sunday in their quest at Joliet Junior College.
Coach
Bobby Wilson's team began the day unbeaten in tourney play, but the Chaps fell twice against Oakton, 6-2 and 8-3 to close the season at 27-16 overall.
Game 1: Oakton 6, Chaps 2
The Chaps were held to just two hits in the first five innings and Oakton took advantage with a 6-0 lead through seven.
Jeremy Conforti put the Chaps on the scoreboard in the eighth with a two-run homer to center, but the Owls held the upper-hand and forced a second-and-deciding title game.
The Chaps had eight hits with Conforti and
Cliff Vickers leading the way with two hits apiece. Vickers (triple) and
Cam Bailey (double) joined Conforti in extra-base hits.
Game 2: Oakton 8, Chaps 3
Oakton jumped out front early, scoring five runs on six hits in the first and went on to the title.
The Chaps cut the deficit to 6-2 in the third.
A.J. Taylor lifted a one-out single to left that drove in
Kyle Fenner, who led off with a single to left. Two batters later, Conforti's ground out scored
David Marshall.
Marshall ended the Chaps' scoring with an RBI double in the sixth.
Carson Roberts led the Chaps with three hits, and Conforti and
Lucas Hansen each added a double.
LHP
Frankie Klemm struck out five in his five innings.
