No. 1 College of DuPage overcame a 13-point deficit in the first four minutes of play Sunday in the Chaparrals' 48-19 victory over the Aurora Junior Varsity in junior college football at MacDougall Field.
Â
The Chaps improved to 7-1 overall heading into Saturday's game at Hocking.
Â
The Spartans took possession on the opening kickoff and drove 80 yards in six plays, taking just under two minutes off the clock for a 7-0 lead.
Â
COD ran two plays and turned the ball over on a first-and-10 play from its 36-yard line and the Spartans recovered for a 22-yard fumble recovery for a 13-0 lead with 11:42 left in the opening quarter.
Â
The Chaparrals took notice of the wake-up call, and then scored 31 unanswered points to win going away.
Â
"I give their coaching staff and team credit,'' Chaparrals head coach
Matthew Rahn said. "They punched us in the mouth right off the bat. We responded well, but this late in the season, you can't fall behind that early.''
Â
One of the Chaps who answered the call was sophomore running back
Ernest Temple. On COD's first scoring drive, the Chicago native rushed for 50 of the Chaps' 79 yards and cashed in on a 1-yard plunge with 4:06 left.
Temple led the Chaps in rushing with 160 yards on 17 carries.
Jamareon Dale was next wtih 127 yards on 13 carries as the Chaps gained 370 rushing yards on 43 carries
Â
In the second, quarterback
Peyton O'Laughlin capped a 10-yard drive with a seven-yard TD, and O'Laughlin later connected on a 56-yard scoring pass to All-American running back
Jaden McGill. The Chaps ended the second quarter on
Christian Casillas' 47-yard field goal with 31 seconds in the half and COD led 24-13.
Â
The Chaps then outscored Aurora 24-6 in the second half.
Â
"We established the ground game and used that to get our offense flowing,'' Rahn said. "We have experienced depth at the running back position and our line created openings for them to take advantage.
Â
"Ernest ran the ball extremely well today and Jaden followed through.''
Â
COD showed its depth on special teams as well. Fellow kicker
Mason Wojtas added a personal-best 42-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter.
O'Lauglin was 9 of 12 passing for 136 yards and a TD.
COD defensive backs
Andrew Ewald and
Isaac Martinez each had an interception with Ewald returning his 90 yards.
Riley Dravet had three pass breakups.
Antonio Rivera led the defense with 10 total tackles including six solos. Martinez had seven solos and
Guy Goss five solos.
