Coach
William Anderson didn't hesitate explaining how his College of DuPage team found success during its game Saturday against College of Lake County.
Â
"We generated offense from our defense,'' he said. "That gave us a chance.''
Â
Sophomore
Tyree Spencer's 3-pointer with 25 seconds left was the difference maker for the Chaparrals, who won their first game of the season 70-69 over the visiting Lancers.
Â
The victory was the Chaparrals' first in 10 games as they now close the 2018 portion of the season Tuesday night at home against Moraine Valley. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Â
The Final Countdown
The Chaparrals overcame an 11-point deficit in the second, and neither team held a greater than three-point lead over the final 5:51 to play. COD fought through two one-point deficits late. Trailing 69-67 with 44 seconds remaining,
David Spell found Spencer alone on the far left wing. The Bellwood native drained the 3-pointer and the Chaps led 70-69 with 25 seconds left.
Â
Tough D
The Chaparrals allowed only one field goal attempt by the Lancers, an errant layup from Malcolm Reed with four seconds left. Spell covered up the rebound with half a second left. On the inbounds play, the Lancers recovered, but Trevor Bowman's 3-pointer at the buzzer was off and the Chaps secured their first victory of the season.
Â
Coach Says
We found a way to win tonight,'' Anderson said. "Our sophomores showed a lot of leadership and I'm proud of our effort. Our bench sustained us the entire game.''
Â
Eye-Catching Stat
The Chaparrals forced 24 turnovers and turned them into a one-sided advantage. COD outscored the Lancers, 31-10 on points off turnovers.
Â
And For the Chaps …
Spencer scored 16 points, sharing game-high scoring honors with the Lancers' Elijah Wycers. Spell was the only other Chaparral in double figures with 10.
Khyre Hines,
Jason Peace and
Franklin Montgomery each scored eight points apiece.
