Fourth quarter goes awry

Freshman Jaylyn Grant led a trio of Chaparrals in double figures with 19 points, but visiting Malcolm X College pulled away in the fourth quarter and handed the Chaps a 77-55 defeat in the season opener for both teams Tuesday night.

Grant's night
The Westmont native played 31 minutes and hit 6 of 15 field goal attempts and hit all five free throws. She had six rebounds with two steals and two blocks.

In double figures
Nichele Lodree was next with 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Allycia Ellis, the program's only returner from a year ago, scored 12 points with seven rebounds and three steals.

The pivotal moment
The Chaps, who never led, cut the Hawks' lead to eight, 54-46 with 9:46 left in the game. That's when the Hawks found another gear, outscoring the Chaps 18-2 and leading 72-49 with 4:42 remaining. Jada McCurdy led four Hawks in double figures with 20 points.

What's next
The Chaps play host to Truman College on Thursday night. Tipoff is 5 p.m.
