South Suburban sweep

Coach Bobby Wilson's Chaparrals demonstrated how to play with and without a lead in earning a doubleheader road sweep over South Suburban, winning 8-6 and 9-3 in Region IV baseball Wednesday afternoon.

The victories snapped the Chaps' six-game losing streak. They take a 23-18-1 overall record into Thursday's 9-inning game with North Central's JV team. First pitch is 3:30 p.m.

Game 1: Chaps 8, South Suburban 6
Mike Wagner gave the Chaps an early 2-0 lead on a two-run home run over the left-field wall in the first and his team remained out front for the duration. The Chaps added two runs in each of the second and third innings for a 7-0 lead. South Suburban drew within a run of the lead after its three-run third and a three-run fifth innings. Dan Opem and Jack Howard each had two hits with two-RBIs apiece. Simon Marinelli and Opem each doubled.

Game 2: Chaps 9, South Suburban 3
The Chaps trailed 3-1 before getting back on track with an impressive fifth and sixth inning. Rocco Pascente tied the game at 3-3 with his two-run single to left in the fifth and Mitch Sandleback later scored on a ground out. Then in the sixth, Sandleback came through with a grand slam that brought in Steven Salvino (single), Wagner (walk) and Opem (walk). Sherman Martin drove in two runs, while Salvino, Howard and Pascente each had two hits. Chris Donahue earned the victory in 5 1/3 innings. Rocky Szmydt got the save.
