Sophomore RHP
Karen Martini stole the show Friday afternoon with a two-hit, 10-strikeout shutout as the Chaparrals earned a split against visiting Elgin Community College.
After losing the opener 6-5, Martini took charge in an 8-0 win that was shortened after five innings. The Chaps (11-34 overall) play host to South Suburban College on Saturday. First pitch is noon.
Game 1: Elgin 6, Chaps 5
Elgin scored three runs in the top of the seventh, thanks to a pair of errors and a wild pitch that sealed the Chaps' fate.
Vincenza Zaccaro tripled and
Kate Koska doubled with a one-base error.
Sarah Crosby drove in two runs.
Game 2: Chaps 8, Elgin 0 5 innings
Martini faced just 17 batters and gave up two singles. She struck out six in the second and third innings, and two in the fifth among her 10.
The Chaps scored eight runs on six hits in the first inning.
Kiara Negron's double scored
Andrea Richards and Koska to give the Chaps a 2-0 lead. Koska tripled and Angela Flamini added a double for the victory.
Elgin dropped to 6-23.
