ROCKFORD (Aug. 23, 2019) — The Chaparrals extended nonconference foe Lake Michigan College to four sets and were swept against defending NJCAA champion Owens College in Friday's play at the McHenry County College Invite.
College of DuPage (0-3 overall) completes tournament play Saturday against Waubonsee College and Sauk Valley College.
Lake Michigan 3, Chaparrals 1
Mikayla Wassell led the Chaps with nine kills and
Natalie Payne added eight in the 25-16, 23-25, 16-25, 22-25 defeat. Setter
Melody Raices dealt 23 assists with 11 digs. Wassell added four service aces with teammates
Maddie Shulski and
Halyn Balon each with three. Earning double-digit dig efforts were Shulski (17) and (10).
Owens 3, Chaparrals 0
Payne set the tone with seven kills in the Chaps' 16-25, 15-25, 7-25 defeat. Raices totaled 13 assists with Balon throwing down two service aces.
Kiara Negron led in digs with seven.
"We played two difficult opponents today,'' Chaparrals coach
Tolis Koskinaris said. "The biggest positive is we're getting better each set by playing together.''
