Third-quarter flurry hurts Chaps

Box Score GLEN ELLYN (Sept. 14, 2019) — A quick flurry of third-quarter activity gave No. 10 Iowa Central second-half momentum as the Tritons dealt the Chaparrals a 50-36 defeat in NJCAA football Saturday afternoon at Bjarne Ullsvik Stadium.

"Our young guys battled against a ranked team all day long,'' Chaparrals coach Matt Foster said. "Give Iowa Central credit. When we were able to get within three, they answered back and took away the momentum that we had worked very hard to get.''

Foster referred to the third quarter when the Chaps cut the Tritons' lead to 30-27 with two touchdown runs — one a 39-yard tally from Isaiah Nwokenkwo and another on a bit of razzle-dazzle.

On second-and-4 from the Iowa Central 28, quarterback Benjamin Little Jr. faded back and tossed a screen pass to wide receiver Josh Benson. The freshman from St. John, Ind., then stepped back and found teammate Lazerick Eatman for the TD pass and the Chaps trailed 30-27 with 5:05 remaining in the quarter.

But Iowa Central answered back with a pair of touchdown runs within a one-minute span, despite Camron Harrell's 85-yard blocked PAT, his second in as many home games, on the second Tritons' score.

The Chaps closed the scoring late in the game on Torre Butts Jr.'s 10-yard TD reception from back-up quarterback Tom Vatter with 25 seconds remaining.

Little produced 214 yards of total offense; throwing for 101 yards on 7 of 16 passes and rushing for 113 yards on 12 carries. Vatter was 4 of 8 for 70 yards.

Defensively, Alaric Wooten led with eight solo tackles and eight assisted tackles. Nathan Clark and Harrell each had eight solo tackles, while Harrell was credited with the PAT block.

The Chaps (1-2 overall) are at Georgia Military on Sunday afternoon in a game played at Fort Benning, Ga. Iowa Central improved to 3-1.
