Box Score The Chaparrals needed all 60 minutes Saturday night in their 39-35 victory over visiting Ellsworth College in NJCAA football at Bjarne Ullsvik Stadium.
Â
Quarterback
Brayden Miller's Hail Mary pass from 32 yards found wide receiver
Jayvon Blissett in the deep left corner of the end zone as time expired for the victory. It capped a frantic final 92 seconds in which the teams combined for 26 points with the Chaps earning the upper hand.
Â
COD improved to 2-3 overall as it now prepares for Saturday's game at Erie (N.Y.) College in Orchard Park, N.Y. Ellsworth dropped to 1-4.
Â
The scoring frenzy began with the Chaps owning a 27-21 lead. Ellsworth drove 76 yards in 12 plays with the only pass of the drive resulting in a 31-yard TD reception from A.J. Payne to Terry Matthews and the Panthers led, 28-27 with 1:32 remaining.
Â
The Chaps received the ball at midfield and retook the lead in seven plays, thanks to
Lazerick Eatman's six-yard TD reception from Miller. The two-point conversion failed, but it seemed the Chaps were in control and leading 33-28 with 41 seconds left.
Â
However, on the ensuing kickoff, Yannie Scott darted through the Chaps' kickoff return team to the tune of a 75-yard touchdown run and Ellsworth regained the lead, 35-33 with 17.3 seconds left.
Â
Eatman returned the kickoff 27 yards and the Chaps began their final drive on the Ellsworth 45. A Miller to
Jordan Robertson pass for 13 yards gave the Chaps a first-and-10 opportunity from the 32 with 5.4 seconds left.
Â
The Lexington, Ky., native took the snap and worked himself to the left side of the line. He stepped back and heaved a high-arching pass into the left corner of the end zone. Blissett came down with the ball with no time on the clock and the Chaps celebrated the hard-to-believe victory as pandemonium broke on their bench.
Â
On the night, Miller threw for five TDs on 16 of 25 passing for 296 yards.
Darrell Smith ran for 56 yards on nine carries. Four different receivers caught TD passes; led by Eatman, who had five receptions for 128 yards and two TDs.
