Stellar defensive effort

The Chaparrals tossed aside a four-game losing streak Wednesday night with their best defensive effort of the season.

Abram Ross scored 16 points with 16 rebounds and teammate Khyre Hines led with 17 as the Chaps defeated visiting Harper College 67-47 in N4C men's play.

The 47 points allowed surpassed the Chaps' best defensive effort of the season — a 57-52 victory over Black Hawk College on Dec. 19. They were sound off the glass with a decided 57-24 advantage over the Hawks.

COD broke away from Harper late in the first half when it went on a 12-0 run. Leading 21-16 with 4:12 remaining, Joe Bell closed the run by scoring six of his 11 points and COD led 33-16 with 50 seconds to go.

Hines was 7 of 14 from the floor and scored both of COD's 3-pointers. Ross hit 8 of his 16 shots and nine of his 16 boards were on the offensive end.

Bell also had nine offensive boards and earned his first double-double with an 11 and 10 night.

Evan Wagner-Talley had nine points with 13 reobunds. Patrick Shaughnessy was next with eight points.

The Chaps remain home Saturday when they play Madison College with a 3 p.m. tip.

NOTE: The Chap honored their four sophomores — Austin Esterly, Hines, Shaughnessy and Wagner-Talley — in a pregame ceremony.
