Nick Fushi drove in five runs and went 4-for-4 and
Jack Oberli needed only a triple to hit for the cycle as the No. 2 seeded Chaps defeated No. 3 Elgin 9-4 in the NJCAA Region IV, Division III first-round Thursday afternoon at COD.
The Chaps (27-20 overall) now move on to Oakton CC for the duration of the four-day tournament. They will play Oakton at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Trailing 3-0 after three innings, the Chaps took control of the game in the fifth, thanks to Fushi's two-run single that pushed COD ahead for the first time, 5-4. Fushi extended the lead to 7-4 on a two-run double in the seventh, and he later scored on
Anthony Perez's single to center for an 8-4 lead.
The Chaps out-hit the Spartans, 13-6
, and they had five extra-base hits for the game.
Oberli clubbed a solo homer in the third and he finished with three runs scored.
On the mound, RHP Zak Fischer dominated in an eight-inning effort. He struck out six and did not issue a walk and scattered six hits. Two of his four runs allowed were earned.
Nolan Pomatto and Seth Borden each had two hits.
