Chaps split opening day at NJCAA tourney

College of DuPage scored six unanswered runs and shocked No. 3 seed Herkimer College 7-4 in the first round of the NJCAA Division III championship, held at Carrier Field of Dreams Park in Syracuse, N.Y.

The Chaps then took a hard-luck 2-0 loss to No. 2 seed Corning in the second round. The Chaps face Rowan College of Gloucester County at 10 a.m. Eastern time Saturday in the consolation round. A win keeps the Chaps' chances at a national title intact, while a loss will send them into the fifth-place game.

Chaparrals 7, Herkimer (N.Y.) 4
Trailing 4-1 after three innings, the Chaps gained momentum with a three-run fourth. Gianna Maida lifted a sac fly to right that scored Carlee Baker, who led off the inning with a bunt single. Then with two outs, freshman Amber Dasenbrock sent a single to center that scored Kelsey Warren (single) and Lauren Onnezi, who pinch-ran for Paige Jahaske, who was hit by a pitch.

Nicole Brace broke the tie in the sixth on a two-out, two-run double to right center that scored Maida (double) and Ashley Eiermann (hit by pitch).

In the seventh, Jahaske reached base on a two-out triple and then scored on an infield single by Maida.

Dasenbrock went the distance, striking out 10 and issuing just one walk. She scattered eight hits.

Corning 2, Chaparrals 0
Corning scored its runs in the first and held off the Chaps for the victory.

The Chaps had the bases loaded in the first, but couldn't get the big hit. Carlee Baker had two of the Chaps' four hits. Warren and Vincenza Zaccaro had the other singles. Dasenbrock struck out three and gave up five hits in the loss.
