Chaps power past Elgin

Quality starting pitching combined with timely hitting gave the Chaparrals a Region 4 sweep over Elgin Community College on Tuesday afternoon.

The Chaps (25-20 overall) relied upon LHP Frankie Klemm, who struck out a season-high 10 in a 3-2 win in the opener. And not to be outdone, RHP Zak Fischer followed with a one-hit shutout in the Chaps' 10-0 win in five innings.

COD faces Oakton in a nine-inning game Thursday before playing Waubonsie on Saturday at home.

Game 1: Chaps 3, Elgin 2
Behind Klemm's quality start, the Chaps earned the win when Seth Borden delivered a walk-off RBI single to left that scored Jack Oberli for the win. The Chaps took a 1-0 lead when Anthony Perez scored on an error from Giovanni Lopez's single in the fourth. One inning later, Oberli led off the fifth with a solo home run and COD led 2-0, Elgin answered with a pair of runs in the sixth that set-up Borden's heroics. Borden had two hits.

Game 2: Chaps 10, Elgin 0 5 innings
Fischer's only blemish was a two-out double in the fifth. But he had the luxury of a 4-0 lead that was padded when the Chaps scored four runs in the fourth. Nick Fushi sealed the victory with a two-run homer to right for the walk-off 10-run rule win. Borden went 3-for-3 with three doubles and three RBI. Oberli had a pair of doubles with two RBI and Nolan Pomatto also doubled. Fischer struck out seven and walked three for the victory.
