Runs were at a premium Thursday afternoon for the Chaparrals, who found a way to defeat No. 9 Oakton 2-1 in Region 4 play.
 
An infield ground out from Anthony Perez scored Jack Oberli in the ninth for the game-winning RBI.
 
The Chaps, now 26-20 overall, took the season series over the Owls (2-0) and guaranteed COD home field in Thursday's opening round of the NJCAA Region 4 tournament. Full tournament brackets will be announced Monday.
 
The teams combined for eight hits and the Chaps overcame three errors for the victory.
 
Trailing 1-0 after five innings, the Chaps tied the game on Nolan Pomatto's sacrifice fly to right that scored Dan Gusel, who led off the inning with a walk. Gusel moved to second on a sac bunt from Zion Baker, and then reached third on Cliff Vickers' single to short.
 
In the ninth, Oberl led off with a single to left, and then stole second. After Nick Fushi walked, Giovanni Lopez loaded the bases with no outs on a bunt.
 
Coach Bobby Wilson's team received solid pitching from starter Seth Borden, and relievers Nick Stacey and Adam Scheid. Borden threw five innings and gave up only two hits and one earned run with three strikeouts and three walks. Stacey threw an inning and faced the minimum three batters. Scheid earned the win with three innings of two-hit relief.
 
The Chaps close their home regular season schedule Saturday against Waubonsee. First pitch is noon.
