Box Score GLEN ELLYN (Sept. 11) — The nation's top-ranked non-scholarship team in College of DuPage could not overcome a 17-point first quarter by visiting Iowa Central in a 41-14 home-opener loss Saturday afternoon at Bjarne UIlsvik Stadium.
The Tritons scored on each of their first two drives, then added a 52-yard punt return for a score and held the lead with 3:23 left in the opening quarter.
Down 24-0, the Chaps impressed with a quick strike two-minute drill, using just 19 seconds to end the half when freshman QB
Brooks Blount connected with
Myles McKatherine on a 12-yard touchdown pass.
The Chaps drove 49 yards in just three plays; enabled by a key 34-yard reception from Blount to sophomore wide-out
Lazerick Eatman that brought the Chaps to the Iowa Central 15.
Two plays later, Blount and McKatherine connected on the tally.
The Chaps finished their scoring late in the fourth quarter, this time with Eatman and Blount succeeding on a 24-yard TD pass with just 1:02 remaining.
Head coach
Matthew Rahn complimented the work of his freshman QB.
"Brooks showed what he is capable of doing,'' Rahn said. "Come game time, Brooks can flip a switch. We were able to see some things from all of our quarterbacks today. But one thing is a given. We have QBs who had a lot of time off from COVID and haven't played in a while. It takes a while to find the timing. We'll get there.''
Blount finished 15 of 23 passing for 211 yards, 2 TDs and threw one INT. Eatman led the receivers with six receptions for 88 yards.
On the ground,
Taveon Porter was the leading rusher with 33 yards on nine carries.
Darrell Smith rushed for 32 yards on nine carries.
Rahn said his defense continued to play well. "Aside from a few of those mistakes, I thought we played awfully tough against a very good Iowa Central team. Our guys wore down a bit and we'll need our offense to help pick them up. We gotta have our offense own up and we will.''
Defensively,
Dominic Padjen,
Joseph Holmes and
Joe Swaray each totaled five tackles, with Swaray leading in solos with five. Defensive lineman
Tom Trieb had 2 1/2 sacks with seven QB hurries.
The Chaps are at home Saturday against Hocking. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
