Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Mark Reinhiller, Sports Information Coordinator

Chaps build lead, rout Wright

Stellar rebounding and shooting were the difference makers to COD, which defeated visiting Wilbur Wright 74-55 in Region 4 men's basketball Saturday afternoon.

Behind Derome White's 16 points and Drew Gaston's 15, the Chaps won their second straight and third in the last four games.

They'll take a 3-4 record into Monday night's game at North Central JV.

Beginning at the 8:44 mark of the first half, Dane Boe scored seven of his eight points that keyed a 20-4 run to put the Chaps up for good midway through the first quarter.

Derome White capped the run with a bucket inside and COD led 33-20 with 2:39 left.

"There's such improvement over the last four games and I like where we're trending,'' head coach Joe Kuhn said. "Creating good shots and on the other end, things change when you guard well.''

COD shot just under 50 percent for the game with a 29-for-59 effort from the floor. It out-rebounded the Rams 45-31 against a team that likes to shoot from outside.

Wright opened the game with successive 3-pointers, but went 1-for-22 from 3-point range the rest of the game.

"Lots of guys stepped up,'' Kuhn said. "Derome is so quick and hard to guard. His decision making is much better. Matt (Elliott) was huge on the boards this afternoon. And Drew is getting better each game. He's creating for others.''

The Rams got as close as three (40-37) with 16:51 to go, but COD answered right back on a 9-1 spurt and comfortably led to the end.

"I'm most pleased with our defensive effort,'' Kuhn said. "It's taken a while to get going.''
