Alyssa Havard played the entire 45 minutes for College of DuPage and led in scoring with 20 points, but visiting Waubonsee answered back late in the fourth quarter and went on to defeat the Chaps 75-72 in overtime in Region 4 women's play Thursday night.
Â
Katlyn Allen was next with 18 points,
Mykah Berkompas 13 and
Serenity McDaniel with 12 as COD fell to 0-3 overall.
Â
The Chaps fought back from a 10-point deficit in the first quarter and outscored the visiting Chiefs 14-10 in the second quarter and 18-14 in the third for a 49-47 lead entering the final quarter.
Â
A McDaniel 3-pointer with 5:09 left gave COD its largest lead of the game, 59-53, but the Chiefs answered back with a 7-0 run and the remainder was a one-possession game.
Â
Down 65-62 with 38 seconds to go in regulation, Havard ripped a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left on the clock and the game went into OT.
Â
The Chaps never led in OT and got to within a point of the lead three times — the last on Korrianna Wilson's basket with 37 seconds to go.
Â
Brooke Heiman led the Chiefs with a game-high 31.
Â
"We can't come out timid and trail by 10 in the first quarter and expect to win,'' head coach
Abigail Talley said. "But I give our team a lot of credit and commend them for the effort to get back into it. They fought through it and slowed things down to find a rhythm. We just didn't finish it.''
Â
Talley credited Havard's play in the second quarter that created a spark and just a 33-31 deficit at halftime.
Â
"Afterward, I didn't really need to tell them what it was that cost us,'' Talley said. "They've bought in. This is the type of game, especially so early in the season, that we can learn from.''
Triton game
Berkompas scored 19 points and Allen added nine but host Triton led early and defeated the Chaps 65-36 on Saturday.
