Chaps walk-off with 18-17 victory

A combined 33 runs and 30 hits between Division II No. 12-ranked Kankakee College and the Chaparrals came down to the bottom of the ninth.

Joe Cosenza came through with a walk-off double to right that scored pinch-runner Matt Kaleta and the Chaps owned their 17-16 win over the Cavaliers in Region IV baseball Thursday afternoon.

Carson Roberts played a big role in the victory, hitting two home runs and totaling six RBI with hot-hitting Jeremy Conforti adding a home run while going 4-for-6 with a double.

A.J. Taylor had a pair of doubles and Kyle Fenner joined Conforti with four hits as the Chaps totaled 18 on the afternoon.

COD scored multiple runs in four of the first six innings and then needed to withstand Kankakee's six-run seventh that tied the game at 16-16.

In the night, Cliff Vickers singled to center and Cosenza connected on a double to right-center that brought in Kaleta, who pinch-ran for Vickers, from first.

Reliever Luke Miller threw two innings of relief and earned the victory. In both the eighth and nine, the Cavaliers loaded the bases only to walk away scoreless in each frame. He gave up three hits, walked three with one strikeout, but was effective in keeping the Cavs off the scoreboard.

Roberts delivered a three-run shot in the first, and connected on a two-run homer in the fifth., his infield ground-out in the sixth gave him his sixth RBI.

Conforti, who hit three home runs against College of Lake County on Wednesday, had another big day at the plate. He missed the cycle by a triple, connecting on a double in the first, a solo homer in the fourth, a RBI-single in the fifth and a double in the sixth.

The Chaps improved to 16-9 overall, while the Cavaliers dropped to 30-6.
