Chaps' good times keep rolling

The Chaparrals concluded their week with an N4C sweep at Rock Valley, winning 10-2 and 15-10 on Saturday.
 
The victories gave COD an unbeaten week at 4-0 as they take their overall record of 18-9 to Elgin on Monday for a nine-inning game that begins at 3 p.m.
 
Game 1: Chaparrals 10, Rock Valley 2
Trailing 2-1 after five innings, the Chaps gained momentum and the advantage for good with an eight-run inning capped by Carson Roberts' grand slam. The Chaps sent 13 to the plate and A.J. Taylor preceded Roberts' blast with a one-out, two-run single. David Marshall added a solo shot in the seventh. On the mound, Frankie Klemm gave the Chaps seven innings, striking out six, walking four and allowing seven hits. He allowed only one earned run. Dan Gusel was the only Chap who had two hits.
 
Game 2: Chaparrals 15, Rock Valley 10
The Chaps' offensive outburst got going when they broke open a 3-3 game in the third with a four-run fourth, a five-run fifth and three runs in the sixth for a 15-3 lead. Taylor led off the game with a homer to left, and then connected on his second home run of the game, this time a 3-run shot to left in the fourth. COD scored five runs on five hits in the fifth, and Roberts added a solo home run in the sixth. Taylor had four RBI for the game, and Roberts led with three hits. Taylor, Jeremy Conforti, who homered in the first, and Cam Bailey all had two hits. Lucas Hansen drove in three runs. Starter Anthony Rainieri threw four innings and scattered three hits around five walks.
 
Big Chap sticks
Conforti and Roberts dominated at the plate this week. For Conforti, he finished 9-for-18 with 5 HRs, one double, 9 RBI and a 1.39 slugging percentage. Roberts, who signed with Division I-member Illinois-Chicago, finished the week 7-for-14 with 4 HRs, 2 doubles, 13 RBI and 9 runs scored. His slugging percentage was 1.42.
