No. 1 College of DuPage concluded its annual COD Invite with a 3-1 victory over fellow Region 4 foe Harper on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Chaps concluded the tourney 2-2 and now prepare for Waubonsee on Tuesday night at PEC Arena. First serve is 6 p.m.
 
COD, behind sophomore Amanda Leibrock's 21 kills and ace power Cyd Martinez (5 aces, 20 digs) earned a hard-fought 25-12, 16-25, 25-19, 25-15 victory to improve their overall record to 6-5.
 
"We stepped up our play when we needed to,'' said head coach Tolis Koskinaris. "It was a positive weekend where we lots of people into a match. We're going to build upon this weekend as we go along. All in all, it was a success.''
 
In the opener, COD jumped out to a 14-3 lead and the Hawks never got closer than eight points of the Chaps' lead.
 
In the second, Harper used an early 6-0 run. After COD closed in Harper's lead at 11-8, the Hawks used a 4-0 spurt and tied the match at 1-1.
 
COD, which led 11-10 in the third, featured Martinez serving and the sophomore rallied her team on a 5-0 run and the Chaps earned the fourth and led 2-1.
 
In the fourth and deciding set, COD led 17-15 before earning side-out and Martinez again serving. The Chaps pushed the lead to 21-15 and went on to earn the victory.
 
"When we can earn some quality serves and get an ace, it really helps our team,'' she said. "We re-gained the momentum and earned a victory over a team we will see quite a bit this season.''
 
Melissa Alvarez added 12 kills and Ashley Bylsma dealt 33 aces. Along with Martinez's five aces, Abigail Alonzo contributed four aces along with 21 digs. Martinez added 20 digs and Jaidyn Tan 10.
