Defending champs rally past N.D. Science 38-31

Sophomore All-American Jaden McGill's 6-yard plunge with six seconds remaining capped a second-half comeback for top-ranked College of DuPage in its 38-31 victory at No. 2 North Dakota State College of Science on Saturday afternoon.

The victory places the two-time reigning NJCAA champions at 4-0 overall and 3-0 against D3 competition heading into Saturday's home game against D1 nationally-ranked Iowa Central. Kickoff is 1 p.m.

COD, which defeated NDSCS for last year's national title crown at COD, overcame a 31-28 deficit with 4 ½ minutes left in the game.

Freshman Christian Casillas succeeded on a 22-yard field goal attempt with 4:33 remaining in the game. The Chaparrals then elected to onside the ensuing kickoff and recovered, setting the tone for the final drive capped by McGill's score.

McGill finished the day with his first 100-yard rushing game of the season, leading with 110 yards on 18 carries and two TDs.

COD outscored the host Wildcats 18-3 in the second half and rolled up 477 yards of total offense. Quarterback Peyton O'Laughlin threw for 284 yards on 14 of 23 passing with two touchdowns.

The Chaparrals, who trailed 28-20 at halftime,  overcame four turnovers — two interceptions and two fumbles.

McGill gave the Chaps a 7-0 lead on a three-yard score on their first possession of the game, taking just 2:49 off the clock.

O'Laughlin connected with Willie Feagin on a 5-yard score and later added a 34-yard strike to Lafabian Fain, both in the second quarter.

The Chaps tied the game early in the third quarter, forcing a fumble on the Wildcats' opening possession. The capped a quick drive, thanks to Ernest Temple's 1-yard score with 12:19 left. COD faked the PAT and kicker Mason Wojtas hit Temple on the two-point conversion, tying the game at 28-28.

Alexander Henry gave NDSCS its last lead of the game (31-28), hitting a 30-yard field with 4:41 to go in the third.

All-American defensive back Guy Goss totaled 15 tackles (11 solo) and came through with a 10-yard sack and one forced fumble. Linebacker Martrell Hightower followed Goss with 13 totals (4 solos).

DL Darion Johnson and LB Michael Tringali each had a sack. LB Andrew King and DB Riley Dravet each laid out a forced fumble.
