Jayden Dean's driving basket capped a game-winning, three-point play with eight seconds left in the Chaparrals 74-71 victory over visiting Madison in Region 4 men's basketball Thursday night at PEC Arena.
Â
COD improved to 10-6 overall and 6-5 Region 4 heading into Saturday's game at College of Lake County. Madison dropped to 5-9, 3-6.
Â
Dean led the Chaps with 17 points, and added an excellent floor game with six assists along with six rebounds.
John Gray III followed with 16 points (four 3-pointers) with four assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Luka Cuk, in his season debut, reached double figures with 12 points, four rebounds and two blocks.
Â
"Very proud that our guys were able to come back in the final five minutes,'' head coach
Joe Kuhn said. "Jayden played very well and he got the job done with his game-winning drive, along with leading us in assists. John Gray played his best all-around game of the year and good to see Luka get a chance to show what he can do.''
Â
Madison, which trailed for most of the game, rallied and took a 67-62 lead with 4:11 to go. COD patiently lowered the gap and took a 71-69 lead on
Braylen Meredith's lay-in with 38 seconds left.
Â
The WolfPack tied the game off a steal under the basket, setting up Dean's go-ahead three-point play.
Â
"We're at 10 wins in early January and tonight was a good win,'' Kuhn said. "Give Madison credit as they fought back hard. That we were able to answer their run is a good sign of our team's improvement.''
