Howard banks at the buzzer to force OT in Chaps win over Bulldogs

The College of DuPage men's basketball program honored its sophomores with a dramatic overtime victory over the South Suburban College Bulldogs inside PEC Arena on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

Cameron Chandler, Matt Nadelhoffer, Payton Moore and Adyn McGinley received pregame recognition before a slugfest with SSC.

Ethan Howard got the highlight reel going early with a hoop and a harm, knocking down a three-point play with 16:15 left in the first to make it a 6-5 SSC ballgame. A few minutes later, Amarri Ford induced a steal and threw down a dunk on the other end. A deep three-pointer by McGinley and timely free throws from him, Howard and Moore down the stretch kept COD within range of a sharpshooting South Suburban squad, down 22-27 with just over six minutes to go in the half. COD got to the line 22 times, completing 16 of them in the half alone.

Logan Glover added to the excitement in the arena with a breakaway slam that forced SSC to call timeout, trying to stop the DuPage momentum. Down by just a bucket, COD allowed SSC to enter the halftime break up by six, 39-33.

The second half started with Chandler dominating down low with three quick baskets to keep COD in it through the first five minutes. Ford then took over, rifling off two three-pointers and an old-fashioned three-point play after he was fouled on a driving layup. McGinley followed suit with a deep shot of his own, making it a 57-59 SSC lead with 8:09 to play in regulation.

Over the next few minutes, Glover found his way at the line six times, making all six and tying the contest up at 65 apiece. With a little over two minutes to go, a Bulldog three-point play made it 70-67, SSC.

Ford was fouled on his ensuing attempt and still made the basket but couldn't see it swirl through from the line. With 1:40 to go, SSC led 70-69. On the next offensive COD possession, the same results happened to Glover. Now with 37 seconds remaining, the Bulldogs led 73-71.

Glover picked a Bulldog pocket and came away with a steal but was fouled on his shot attempt and injured during the play. Unable to shoot, SSC designated Chandler to the line, where he went 1-2.

Down 75-72 with five seconds to go, Coach Joe Kuhn's inbound play got the ball into the hands of Ethan Howard in the middle of the floor who pulled up from several feet behind the arc, sinking it through off the glass to force overtime.

In the extra five-minute frame, Ford scored the first bucket before another Howard three-point play kept DuPage even with SSC. Howard then sunk two free throws to make it an 82-82 game halfway through the period.

McGinley forced another Bulldog turnover and found Glover ahead for another statement dunk. The Bulldogs couldn't stay hot shooting down the stretch, while Glover made two more shots from the stripe to go up 86-83 with eighty tick marks remaining. Chandler added an insurance bucket to put DuPage up by five with the shot clock turned off.

SSC missed its first three chances from beyond the arc with time winding down before seeing one go through the cords, bringing the Bulldogs to within two, down 88-86. Forced to foul, Glover was precise again with two makes, ending a roller-coaster 90-86 Sophomore Night victory.

Ford led the attack with 17 points, 15 of them coming after halftime. Howard trailed with 13; his buzzer-beater to end regulation was his only second-half field goal; while Chandler was the main option down low with a dozen points. Glover and McGinley each had nine, with Moore and Vuk Zogovic combining for the final eight points.

Head Coach Joe Kuhn was ecstatic with his team's effort, stating:

"We made big plays down the stretch. Defensively, I thought we really had them bottled up most of the night. They got us on some short-clock situations, and if you just look at the score, you might not think we played great defense — but I really liked our defensive effort. Cam was tremendous. Logan's free throws down the stretch were huge. All in all, this is probably the biggest win for our program, outside of our run to Nationals my first year."

COD (17-11) ends the regular season at McHenry County College on Saturday, Feb. 21, trying to close out the campaign on a four-game win streak.
