Braylen Meredith scored a season-high 32 points, including 24 in the second half, but visiting Waubonsee earned a 76-74 victory in Region 4 men's basketball Thursday night.
Â
Meredith finished 10 of 19 from the floor with four 3-pointers and an 8-of-9 effort from the line as COD had its five-game winning streak snapped. The Chaps (8-3, 4-3 Region 4) are at Morton on Saturday. Waubonsee improved to 10-1, 6-1.
Â
Both teams were evenly matched throughout as each club shot 41 percent from the floor and each hit 10 3-pointers.
Â
Waubonsee, which trailed 32-31 at halftime, utilized a 15-6 run in the first four minutes of the second half. COD climbed back and tied the game at 62-62 on
Ben Zielinski's 3 with 5:16 left.
Â
Twice, COD got within one point, the last when Meredith was fouled on a 3-point attempt. He drained all three free throws with 19 second left and the Chiefs up 72-71. But down the stretch, Waubonsee hit four straight free throws and the Chaps'
Greg Strong closed the scoring on a 3 with one second left.
Â
Strong finished with 13 points and
Ramone Enis was the only other Chap in double figures with 10.
Â
"That was a very good Region 4 game tonight,'' Chaps head coach
Joe Kuhn said. "They got that advantage to start the second half. We fought back and kept after it.''
Â
Waubonsee had four in double figures with Zachariah Hayslett's 17 points leading the way.
Â
The game featured five lead changes and three ties.
