The College of DuPage football team traveled to Nelsonville, Ohio, for a rematch against the Hawks of Hocking College. After falling behind by 14 early, the Chaps rallied to earn a 29-23 victory.
With 11 minutes remaining in the second quarter, the scoreless Chaps forced a fourth-and-7 from midfield. DuPage brought pressure and recorded a sack to gain excellent field position. On the ensuing drive, quarterback
Justin Bland found
Daion Gaston down the sideline for a 37-yard gain to set up the Chaps in scoring position. Three plays later,
Nate Foster reached the end zone on a 15-yard pass from Bland to put DuPage on the board.
After trailing 20-7, the Chaps executed a flawless two-minute drill to set up another Bland touchdown pass, this time to Gaston.
To open the second half, DuPage leaned on its run game, and
Haiden Janke powered his way in from 4 yards out.
Danny Duray added the PAT to give the Chaps their first lead of the day.
After Hocking added a field foal early in the fourth quarter to retake the lead, Bland connected with
Ty Carlson for a 52-yard reception to flip the field. Janke capitalized on the goal-to-go opportunity to put the Chaps back on top with under nine minutes remaining, and DuPage never looked back.
With 2:30 left in the fourth and the Hawks driving,
Jimmy Lacy came up with an interception to seal the game for DuPage.
Bland finished the day 19-32 passing for 286 yards. Janke led the rushing attack with 51 yards on 11 carries, while Gaston was Bland's top target with five receptions for 86 yards.
Defensively,
William Sierra,
Cole Hamilton, and
Casey Bending each recorded five tackles. Bending added 2.5 sacks, bringing his season total to an impressive 13.
Dontay Fort tallied 3.5 tackles for loss, and Lacy secured the game clinching interception.
Head Coach Matt Rahn thought this was this was his teams most complete game, stating, "Proud of the kids for battling back. They didn't get discouraged, and they clawed back."
DuPage, fresh off reclaiming the No. 1 ranking in NJCAA DIII, now 6-2, will travel to Highland Community College on Oct. 25 for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
