The College of DuPage football team put its No. 1 ranking on the line Oct. 25, traveling to Highland, Kansas, to take on the Scotties of Highland Community College. The Chaps earned their second consecutive win over an NJCAA opponent, defeating Highland 48-28.
COD opened the scoring when
Justin Bland connected with
Daion Gaston on a 48-yard touchdown reception. After the DuPage defense forced a turnover,
Dexter Stigall powered his way in from 1 yard out to make it 14-0 in favor of the Chaps. Following a Highland touchdown,
Askia Bullie struck paydirt on an 18-yard scamper. On the next possession, the Chaps dug deep into their playbook, dialing up a halfback pass from Bullie, who took a sweep and threw it back to Bland for a 17-yard score. With 5:45 remaining in the half,
Nate Foster hauled in another Bland dime from 44 yards out to make it 35-7 DuPage.
In the second half, the always reliable
Danny Duray connected on a 40-yard field goal. In the fourth quarter, after a Highland touchdown cut the lead to 10, COD running back
AJ Moore broke free for a 65-yard rushing score. Duray later added a 42-yard field goal to seal the victory for DuPage.
Defensively,
Omarion Gooden paced the Chaps with nine tackles.
Casey Bending added a sack, while William Seirra,
Sal Laudicina,
Anthony Ogunniyi and
Dontay Fort each recorded tackles for loss.
Ty Murrell intercepted a pass and returned it 42 yards, while Ogunniyi picked off another and returned it 27 yards. Ogunniyi also contributed a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry for a well-rounded defensive effort.
The No. 1-ranked Chaps will have a week off before heading to Lackawanna College in Scranton, PA, for their regular-season finale.
