Sophomore
Braylen Meredith scored a game-high 26 points, including five in overtime, and teammate
Charles Farrell followed with 23 points and 10 rebounds, as the Chaparrals overcame a 13-point deficit in the second half and defeated visiting Rock Valley 86-75 in OT in Region 4 men's basketball Tuesday night.
Â
The victory was COD's first against the Golden Eagles in 13 seasons, a span of 24 straight losses. The last COD victory in the series was 72-71 on Feb. 29, 2012, in the opening round of the 2012 Region 4 Tourney.
Â
Tuesday's game featured five ties and nine lead changes and the Chaps trailed 44-31 with 16:10 left in the game.
Â
Farrell then caught fire. The Westfield, Ind., native, who was held to just two points in the first half, put the Chaps on his back with 11 points in a five-minute span that brought the Chaps to within five of the lead (51-46) with 10:52 left.
Â
That spurt set-up Meredith, who then scored 13 of his 17 second-half points in the final 10:15, his final field goal putting COD up 68-65 with 1:49 to go.
Â
Freshman guard
Adyn McGinley delivered a 3-pointer from the deep right corner with 30 seconds left, giving COD a 71-69 lead.
Â
The Golden Eagles forced OT on an Adrian Agee jumper with 1.3 seconds left.
Â
COD outscored RVC 15-4 in the five-minute period, earning five points from Meredith and converting on all six free throws, with Farrell perfect on four attempts.
Â
McGinley added 11 points,
Terence Spencer 10 and
Ramone Enis nine.
Ben Zielinski added seven to round out COD's scoring.
Â
COD (17-7, 11-7 Region 4) takes on Milwaukee Area TC (9-14, 8-6) on Thursday. Tip is 7 p.m.
