A complete team effort made a fifth straight NJCAA Division III national championship complete for College of DuPage.
Â
Behind NJCAA champion sprinter
Weston White and depth across the board, the Chaparrals captured the team title for a fifth straight year Saturday afternoon in Utica, N.Y.
Â
COD won the title by scoring points in 21 of the 22 events and totaled 195 points to far surpass runner-up Harper (129). Fellow Region 4 foe Joliet JC was third with 119.
Â
White won both the 100 and 200 meter sprints a year after finishing second in each to fellow Chap
Noah Mack. White wasn't denied on this day, winning the 100 in 10.59 seconds and the 200 in a blistering 21.31. He added a third title on the 4 x 100 relay along with teammates
Tim McMiller,
Landon Zimny and
Eli Phipps.
Â
"It was a great weekend for both men and women,'' head coach
Mallory Dominguez said. "The men faced their stiffest competition and they rose to the challenge. Scoring in all but one event doesn't just happen. Guys stepped up and competed and we won.''
Â
Hammer thrower
Sterling Sawicki and pole vaulter
William Kallas got the ball rolling on Thursday when they each won their event.
Â
Zimny stood out on the weekend. The Geneva native earned runner-up finishes in the 200 and 400 and ran anchor on the third-place 4 x 400 relay.
Â
Ronan Cornelius placed second in both the long jump and high jump and Sawicki added a runner-up spot in the shot put.
Â
Tayo Taiwo placed second in the hammer and
John Buchanan was second in the 3,000 steeplechase. McMiller added a second spot in the 100.
Â
The team title is COD's ninth overall in addition to its fifth straight.
Â
Dominguez earned coach of the meet honors, matching her honor with the women.
Â
NOTE: COD has now won five NJCAA team titles this season — men's cross country, football, men's and women's track, and the men's volleyball won the NJCAA invitational in April … The Chaps have now won 48 team titles in school history.
