Men's Tennis has most Successful Season this Decade

The College of DuPage men's tennis team wrapped up their strongest season in quite some time with a 6-4 overall record, highlighted by dominant performances, major individual improvements, and a determined showing at the Region IV Championships.

The Chaparrals opened the stretch run of the season with a convincing 7-2 road victory over McHenry County College. COD's depth proved to be a major advantage throughout the match, as Brandon Dumbell earned an impressive 6-3, 6-0 singles victory while continuing to show growth from last season. Cole Williams battled hard in singles competition, and Gio Velasco showcased his creative, spin-heavy style of play throughout a competitive match.

In doubles action, Velasco and Dumbell combined for one of the team's strongest performances of the day, overcoming an injury timeout and using aggressive net play and strong serves to secure an 8-5 victory. With McHenry limited by roster shortages, the Chaps capitalized and rolled to the team win.

COD later hosted Lake County Community College in a challenging matchup that ended in an 8-1 loss, but several Chaparrals turned in standout performances. Pablo Gutierrez delivered one of the most dramatic victories of the day at No. 5 singles, battling through a super tiebreaker for an 11-9 win highlighted by perfectly timed lobs and relentless effort.

Dumbell also impressed at No. 1 singles, narrowly falling in a pair of tiebreak sets against one of the region's top competitors. The sophomore pushed the match to the brink and continued to establish himself as one of the Chaparrals' top players heading into postseason play.

The team responded in emphatic fashion during a trip to Sauk Valley Community College, dominating the match from start to finish in a 9-0 sweep. COD controlled virtually every court throughout the afternoon, with several Chaparrals not surrendering a single game in their matches.

The performance served as a major confidence boost entering regionals, as the Chaps displayed sharp shot-making, improved conditioning, and the mental toughness needed to compete with some of the top programs in Region IV.

At the Region IV Tournament, the Chaparrals placed seventh out of 11 teams. COD's top success came from sophomores Brandon Dumbell and Gio Velasco, who teamed up at No. 1 doubles and finished 2-1 during the tournament.

The duo opened with a straight-set victory before facing top-seeded Prairie State in a high-energy semifinal match with a trip to nationals on the line. Despite a hard-fought effort featuring intense rallies and emotional momentum swings, the Chaps fell in straight sets.

Dumbell and Velasco responded with resilience in the third-place match, defeating Illinois Valley 8-6 to close their careers on a high note. Their performance highlighted the leadership and competitiveness the sophomore class brought to the program throughout the season.
