The College of DuPage women's tennis team earned its first victory of the season September 19, defeating Sauk Valley Community College 6-3 at home.

The Chaps bounced back from a loss to Waubonsee with a strong overall team performance, earning wins across singles and doubles competition.

In singles play, the Chaps won 4 out of 6 match ups. Taylor Bakula (6-4, 6-1), Kathy Johns (6-0, 6-4), Martina Ulloa (6-2, 6-3), and Sophia Boersma (6-2, 6-0) all earned victories.

Manuela Sus suffered her first regional loss of the season, falling 6-4, 6-3 to a Sauk Valley opponent who was a regional finalist and national qualifier last season.

Assistant coach Marc Veverka praised Manuela's ability to vary her game.

"Manuela has a crafty game and is able to generate different spins and can generate forceful topspin to push her opponent off the court and then surprise them with slices that drop short in the court," Veverka said.
Head coach Jim Bowers was pleased with the way the rest of the squad delivered.

"It was great to see the rest of the team step up and get some wins to help us score our first victory of the season," Head coach Jim Bowers said.

Veverka also highlighted the doubles play of Semra Jadadic and Sus, noting their shot selection from the back court and their ability to close in for volleys.
 
The Chaps will look to build on the first win of the season as the team continues regional play.
