Kalata qualifies for NJCAA championship

Freshman Olivia Kalata punched her ticket to next month's NJCAA indoor track and field championship, clearing 10 feet, 8 ¼ inches during Friday's F. Lee Slick Invitational.

Kalalta improved by one foot from her effort last week and will represent the Chaps in Lynchburg, Va., on March 6-7.

"It was great to see Olivia put it together and shine tonight,'' head coach Bob Cervenka said. "She put in the effort this week. She wasn't that far off from her three attempts at 11-2.''

Emily Fetzer broke the 6-minute barrier in the mile (5:59.65) and Shaylinn Aver placed eighth in the 800 (2:32.27).

For the men, freshman Kyle Kruthoff was third (15-4 ½) and Brendan Hill (14-10 ¾) in the pole vault. Pryce Giwa-Osagie was sixth in the high jump at 6-2.

In the weight throw, Brandon Loth was fifth (44-4 ¾), Pyaipyo Aung sixth (39-6 ½) and Ryan Maloney seventh (39-2 ¼).

Cervenka noted the 400-meter efforts of Timmy Szylak (7th, 53.07) and Teionte' Mitchell (53.46), and Ricardo Del Toro in the mile (4:31.81) and 800 (2:02.28).
