The Flying Chaparrals were more than up to the task Friday afternoon.

Freshmen pole vaulters Kyle Kruthoff and Brendan Hill finished fourth and sixth, respectively, to lead the Chaps at the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship, held at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.

Kruthoff cleared 15 feet, 11 inches — one inch shy of his season best — and Hill surpassed his season-best by eight inches with his clearance of 15-7.

"Both guys competed very well today when it mattered the most,'' head coach Robert Cervenka said. "Kyle was very steady today and Brendan cleared a season-best at the most opportune time. I'm very proud of what they did today and also during our indoor season.''

Kruthoff cleared 4.5 and 4.65 meters on his first attempts. He cleared 4.75 on his second attempt, 4.85 (15-11) on his first attempt before going out at 4.95.

"It always gives you confidence when you clear on your first attempt,'' he said. "All in all, a good day and proud of the accomplishment.''

Hill surpassed 4.5 on his third attempt, and then progressed by clearing 4.65 and 4.75 on his second attempts. He went out at 4.85.

"It felt great to reach a season best,'' he said. "It took three shots at 4.5 (14-9), and it gave me some added confidence hitting it, and then chasing the next two.

Kruthoff and Hill totaled eight team points as COD finished 21st in the team standings.
