No. 3 Chaps take care of business

Final statistics

From play one of Saturday's game against Liberty Prep, the No. 3-ranked Chaparrals ruled the day.

A 62-yard TD pass from Brooks Blount to Chase Mendoza took just 11 seconds off the clock and the Chaps went on to route the nation's top prep and unbeaten Liberty Prep of Marion, Ind., 44-0 at Bjarne Ullsvik Stadium.

The Chaparrals scored on their first four possessions, added a blocked punt into a TD and scored just before the half for an insurmountable 37-0 halftime lead.

The offensive onslaught was by design, according to head coach Matthew Rahn.

"We knew we wanted to get a lead on them right away,'' he said. "They hadn't lost all year and hadn't played from behind. A total team effort where we executed very well.''

Blount connected with Vince Brown on a two-yard TD pass that completed a 79-yard drive with 7:01 left in the quarter. On their next possession, COD's Darrell Smith rumbled 49 yards on a two-yard drive for a 21-0 lead with 3:52 to go in the quarter.

Anthony Turnage made it a perfect 4-for-4 possession score with a 41-yard field goal, and Nicholas Wade made it 31-0 when he collected a blocked punt and ran it in for a 10-yard TD.

Taveon Porter gave COD a 37-0 halftime lead on a nine-yard TD with 15 seconds left in the half.

Lavale Hill finished the scoring for COD with a 10-yard plunge in the final quarter.

"Proud of our effort today,'' Rahn said. "Our defense stepped up all day long, and I thought (defensive back) Jalen Perkins was all over the field.''

The Chaps play host to NJCAA D1 member Georgia Military on Saturday.
