Youth sets up Chaps

Box Score Zac Ludwig likes his team.

The Chaps' third-year coach opened the 2021-22 athletic season Thursday night when his team took on Bryant & Stratton in Region IV play. And despite begin shut out 4-0 in the opener, there is a lot to like for this Chaps' edition.

"You know, this seems to be a group that has quickly taken to each other,'' he said. "Everyone but one is a freshman and they've bonded very well. It might take a little bit of time, but we're going to have some good things happen.''

The Chaps have just one returner from the 2019 squad — the last season the Chaps played on the field. Sophomore Fran Ottolino saw limited time that year, but has shown leadership and experience the Chaps need.

"Fran didn't get the chance to play much two years ago, but you wouldn't know it with her effort since we got going earlier this month,'' he said. "She leads by example, she's likeable and a very good teammate.''

Ellie Strauch led the Chaps with five shots in the opener against the Bobcats, and goal keeper Amanda Smith had nine saves as the Bobcats scored two goals in each half — all from Brooke Clements.

The Chaps have 17 games scheduled after Saturday's contest against Elgin was canceled. The Chaps return to action Monday night at home against Waubonsee. Kickoff is 6 p.m.
