Come-from-behind game favors No. 2 Chaps

Box Score GLEN ELLYN (Sept. 18) — It took a while for the No. 2-ranked Chaparrals to find their way against visiting Hocking on Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 13-0 midway through the third quarter, the Chaps found a way to get back and then some. A pair of touchdown runs — a 46-yard burst through the middle by sophomore running back Darrell Smith, and an 18-yard scramble from freshman QB Jarred Park with 4:11 left in the game secured a 14-13 come-from-behind victory on a sunny day at Bjarne Ullsvik Stadium.

"Today was about fixing the breaks when things don't go your way, and embracing the breaks when they're in your favor,'' head coach Matthew Rahn said. "We had key players making key plays.''

Penalties and turnovers cost the Chaps in the first half and the visiting Hawks took advantage. After scoring on the game's first drive on a 39-yard field from Jery Velesquez, the Hawks pushed the lead to 10-0 on what appeared to be a pick-six.

The Chaps had first-and-10 at their 9 when defensive back Tony Pope stepped in front of a Brooks Blount pass at the 30 and returned it to the 1.  The ball popped out on a hit, and Shaun Myers recovered in the end zone and the Hawks led 10-0 with 1:19 to go in the half.

"It was a talking point at halftime that the game would have been lopsided in our favor without the penalties in the first half,'' Rahn said. "Our defense played lights-out for four quarter, and our offense was moving the ball. The penalties were killing us.''

Down 13-0 with 5:32 to go in the third, the Chaps got rolling when Taveon Porter returned a kickoff for 36 yards and COD set up at its 38. Three plays later, Smith took the handoff and rushed right up the middle on his touchdown run that lifted the crowd to its feet and it seemed that the Chaps had momentum on their side for the first time on the day.

In the fourth quarter, the Chaps got their go-ahead score, thanks to a Chase Mendoza 19-yard punt return and a 15-yard late hit penalty that put the ball at the Hocking 24 with 4:54 to go.

On third-and-3 from the 18, Park took a bobbled snap and had to scramble. He dodged several Hawks and made a broken play successful through the left side when he lumbered through for the score and COD led 14-13 with 4:11 to go.

"Jarred made the most of the opportunity,'' Rahn said. "It didn't quite work out on getting Jarred into the game last week, and he handled it so well. Today, he got in there, made some plays and moved the ball.''

On Hocking's next possession, defensive end Tom Trieb made two outstanding sacks. He made a stop on a first-and-10 play, then stepped out of the game when he appeared to have been poked in the eye. After he sat the second-down play, he returned and made another sack to effectively end the Hawks' threat.

"We've played three scholarship teams so far this season and there has yet to be a guy who can block Tom,'' Rahn said. "His two sacks were big time plays.''

Smith led the Chaps in rushing with 103 yards on 15 carries.

The Chaps are idle next week and return to Ullsvik Stadium on Oct. 2 when they take on Erie
College.
