A dose of fourth-quarter magic belonged to No. 2 College of DuPage, which defeated No. 5 Hocking 24-17 at Bjarne Ullsvik Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Chaparrals, now 7-1 overall, scored 17 points in an 8-minute and 30 second-span, capped by
Samson Zander's game-winning six-yard TD with 13 seconds left.
Â
COD did not put together a successful offensive scoring drive until sophomore kicker
Joshua Winslow's 24-yard field goal with 8:43 left cut the deficit to 17-10 Hocking.
Â
The Chaps held Hocking to a three-and-out on its next possession, and a 22-yard punt return from
Matthew Brown gave COD the ball at the Hocking 36 with 6:11 to go.
Â
Quarterback
Gavin Sukup drove the Chaps down the field, thanks to a
Vince Brown reception that gave COD a first down at the 25.
Â
Two straight incompletions forced the Chaps' hand, as they were faced with a fourth-and-7 from the 22.
Â
Sukup dropped back and delivered a strike to wide receiver
Demetrius Kellie in the deep right corner of the end zone. Winslow converted the PAT and the game was tied at 17-17 with 4:23 to go.
Â
COD stopped Hocking's next drive, with All-American defensive end
Michael Simon delivering a key third-down hit that brought 4th down on the Hawks' 38.
Â
The Chaps began their game-winning drive at their 20. The drive included a 14-yard reception from Sukup to
Vince Brown, and Zander's 14-yard gain that gave COD a first down at the Hawks 41.
Â
Sukup again found
Vince Brown, this time for 29 yards and COD set up at the first-and-10 at the Hocking 12.
Â
Two plays later, and thanks to a facemask penalty by Hocking that put COD at the 6, Zander burst through the left side for the game-winner.
Â
"We have resilient kids who are consistent,'' Chaps defensive coordinator
Trevor Cipriano said. "If we give up a big play, they know they can bounce back. They show a lot of pride. You have to credit Hocking, they adjusted well on their second TD. We hung in there. Walking into the fire isn't a problem. Defensively, we knew that if we continue to do our job, we know our offense can make plays.''
Â
COD face Liberty Prep on Friday with kickoff at 6 p.m.
