History showed the Chaparrals had not experienced any recent success against defending NJCAA Division II champion Milwaukee Area TC.
Â
COD had lost its last eight games against the No. 8 Stormers, losing by an average margin of 34 points, and dropping 15 of its last 16 meetings.
Â
That streak of misery came to an end Thursday night, with the visiting Chaparrals taking control early and leading by as many as 24 points before hanging on in their 94-92 victory in Region 4 men's basketball.
Â
Outside shooting was the critical factor early as COD (16-12, 11-11 Region 4) hit all eight of its first 3-point attempts, grabbing its largest lead of the game at 31-7 with 13:14 left in the first half. Â
Â
The Chaps were 58.8 percent from the field (20 of 34 FGs) and were 10 of 13 on 3-pointers as they led 52-43 at the break.
Â
COD never trailed, then staved off the Stormers (20-5, 11-3), who drew within one of the lead three times in the game's final minute.
Â
Freshman
Quentin Schaffer scored a game-high 24 points, one point shy of his season best. He hit four 3s, created three steals with two rebounds and one block.
Â
John Gray III followed with 23 points, hitting five of his nine field goals from 3-point land. He led COD in assists and steals with four each.
Â
Braylen Meredith added 19 points with 11 rebounds — his fifth double-double this season — and
Greg Strong added 15.
Â
COD is off until Thursday when it plays its second straight national champion in as many games, 2022 D2 champ South Suburban (23-2, 12-1).
Â
Tipoff is 7 p.m. at PEC Arena in the Chaps' regular-season home finale.
