Freshman
Weston White captured two individual titles and high jumper Ronan Cornelius took the title in his event as the three-time defending NJCAA champion Chaparrals opened their outdoor season Friday and Saturday at Elmhurst's Chicagoland Championship.
Â
White ran the 100 in 10.66 seconds, finishing just ahead of teammate
Noah Mack (10.67). White followed up with the 200 title, running 22.18 seconds with Mack at 22.21.
Â
"Little surprising to hit that time in the 100,'' White said. "Noah and I pushed each other.''
Â
Cornelius won the high jump at 6-foot-6 and also qualified in the long jump (20-6 ¼).
Â
In the 100, White and Mack led six Chaps who earned NJCAA qualifying times —
Elijah Phipps,
Gabriel Parker,
Tim McMiller and Jacob Gagne.
Â
Mack and White teamed with
Elijah Phipps and McMiller in the 4 x 100 relay with an outstanding 41.46-second effort, just 1.08 seconds off the school record set in 1987.
Â
"Going after that record is a pretty big goal,'' Mack said. "To be in sync in our first meet is a good sign of things to come.''
Â
Parker added the 200 to his qualifying efforts.
Â
The 4 x 400 relay of
Graham McAninch, Alex Mendez,
Chris Ruchaj, Mack) running 3:24.52.
Â
Parker added a qualifying time in the 200 and McAninch and Ruchaj earned qualifying times in the 400.
Teammates
Kevin Diederich (5,000 and 10,000), Mendez (400 hurdles),
Connor Sisco (3000 steeplechase), and
John Buchanan (3000 steeplechase) all earned their place in the NJCAA D3 championship on May 15-17 in Utica, N.Y.
Â
Hammer throwers
Isaias Lopez and
Jonathan Sears also earned qualifying standards.
Â
The Chaps have now qualified athletes in 17 of the 22 events.
Â
"Beginning the season with a great start,'' co-head coach
Mallory Dominguez said. "We established ourselves as a contender to get after another title. Knocking out qualifying standards is a testament to how hard we've been working – for both our teams.''
Â
The Chaps are at Wheaton on Saturday.
