The College of DuPage men's track & field team made the short trip to Naperville to compete in the Chicagoland Invitational, hosted by North Central College on Feb. 14. The meet featured a diverse field of two-year and four-year programs, including Division I competition.
William Kallas continued his record-breaking season in the pole vault, clearing 5.10 meters to take first place and surpass his own school record once again. The mark ranks Kallas third in the NJCAA across all divisions and first in Division III.
Peter Ogunleye delivered a strong all-around performance in the jumps, capturing first in the long jump with a leap of 6.74 meters and placing seventh in the high jump after clearing 1.79 meters. Both marks secured him automatic qualification for the NJCAA Outdoor National Championship.
Tayo Taiwo earned a runner-up finish in the shot put with a throw of 15.25 meters and added an eighth-place mark of 14.64 meters in the weight throw. He currently sits 11th nationally in the NJCAA rankings.
On the track,
Corbin Gerace (3:01.09) and
Brendan Spahn (3:01.80) each posted top-three finishes in the 1,000-meter run.
Harley Rizzs advanced to the finals of the 60-meter dash and placed sixth with a time of 7.09 seconds.
"There were a lot of continued season bests and personal records on the men's side that we noticed," said head coach Mallory Dominguez. "We're looking forward to going back to North Central this week for a smaller meet, it'll give us the chance to run a few more events and help everybody round out their indoor season at their best."
Competing regularly against four-year institutions continues to be a valuable experience for the Chaparrals.
"One of the unique parts about our sport is that we're always competing against four-year schools, with the exception of nationals," the coach said. "It makes our athletes that much stronger. You've got 18 and 19-year-olds going up against athletes who might be in their mid-20s. Our kids don't know any different, they just compete."
The Chaps will return to Naperville on Feb. 20 to compete in the North Central Slick Invite.
