The College of DuPage men's track and field team traveled to Allendale, Michigan, on Feb. 7 to compete at the Grand Valley State University Mike Lints Open. Facing a strong field that featured both two-year and four-year institutions, the Chaparrals delivered several notable performances and personal bests.
Tayo Taiwo led the way in the field events, recording a personal-best throw of 15.36 meters (50 feet, 4¾ inches) in the shot put to earn a top finish. The mark currently ranks Taiwo 11th nationally in the NJCAA.
Dionte Shaw followed with a fifth-place finish at 14.57 meters (47 feet, 9¾ inches), while Jai'shawn Morris placed sixth with a throw of 14.22 meters (46 feet, 8 inches).
De'Angelo McCullough continued his strong collegiate start with a second-place finish in the triple jump, clearing 13.14 meters (43 feet, 1½ inches). He also posted a personal-best mark in the long jump, finishing fifth with a leap of 6.42 meters (21 feet, ¾ inch).
On the track,
Jaylin Miller highlighted the sprint events with a third-place finish in the 200 meters, running a season-best time of 22.86 seconds as part of seven season-best performances by the Chaparrals in the event.
Harley Rizzs impressed in his collegiate debut, advancing to the finals of the 60-meter dash and clocking a time of 7.05 seconds.
In the distance events,
Kevin Diederich delivered a standout performance in the 5,000 meters, breaking his own indoor school record by one second and maintaining the No. 1 ranking in NJCAA Division III. Zak Kahsen recorded a personal best in the 3,000 meters, while Ben Butcher added a personal record of his own in the 400 meters with a time of 51.69 seconds.
Adriano Quintero and
David Aviles also posted PR's in the 5000 meter run.
Head coach Mallory Dominguez reflected positively on the weekend's results.
"Overall, another successful weekend," Dominguez said. "We're at the midpoint of the indoor season, so we're starting to see the training kick in with the running events, and we're looking forward to continuing at NCC this weekend."
The Chaparrals will return to action Feb. 13–14 when they travel to Naperville, Illinois, to compete at the North Central College Chicagoland Invite.
