No. 1 College of DuPage took control early, scoring on its first two possessions against visiting Community Christian (Mich.).
Â
But the defending NJCAA champion Chaparrals put all three phases of the game in motion in the final half and walked off MacDougall Field with a 50-0 victory over the Lions on Saturday afternoon.
Â
COD improved to 4-0 overall heading into next week's home game against No. 3-ranked North Dakota State College of Science. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
Â
"Community Christian did a good job of keeping our offense off the field in the first half,'' head coach
Matthew Rahn said. "They sustained drives on us.''
Â
Running back
Michael Cervantes' two-yard touchdown run capped an eight-play drive on COD's opening drive. On their next drive, quarterback
Justin Bland connected with wide receiver
Clayton Bone on a six-yard pass on a drive that ate 5 minutes and 55 seconds off the clock.
Â
In the third quarter, Community Christian set up in punt formation on fourth-and-26 from its 8-yard line. Lineman
Darion Johnson burst through on the left side, blocking the punt with the ball flying out of the end zone and COD earned the safety and a 16-0 lead.
Â
COD then received the ball, and
Ernest Temple capped a five-play, 42-yard drive with a three-yard TD with 7:43 left in the third.
Â
A two-yard TD from
Jamareon Dale and a four-yard score from Bland gave COD its 37-0 led through three quarters.
Â
Cervantes added his second TD of the day – this one from 20 yards — and Hunter Janke ended COD's scoring on a four-yard TD with 2:50 left.
Â
"We got all three phases of the game going well in the second half,'' Rahn said. "We ran the ball well. And our defense earned a shutout and our special teams came through for us. We took it away from them in the second half.''
Bland finished 15 of 28 passing for 179 yards and the one TD.Â
Janke led the Chaps in rushing with 49 yards on seven carries. Cervantes also had seven carries for 37 yards and Dale rushed for 37 yards on six attempts.
Dezmund White totaled 36 yards on three receptions and
Willie Feagin gained 31 yards through the air on three receptions.
