Chaps face South Suburban in Region 4 opener

Coach Abigail Talley's Chaparrals secured the fourth seed in the NJCAA Region 4 D2 Midwest District A championship and face No. 5 seed South Suburban on Thursday afternoon at PEC Arena.

Tip off is 5 p.m.

The Chaps (16-13 overall) take a winning record into the postseason, the first time since the 2013-14 season and face a team they defeated on the road Feb. 13, 67-54.

COD used a 12-0 fourth-quarter run against SSC after entering the final quarter down, 46-44.

Sophomore Makenna Brown led the Chaps against the Bulldogs, scoring 15 points with eight rebounds and Megan Martinez followed with 12.

The Chaps had their four-game winning streak snapped 45-41 in the regular-season finale against Madison on Thursday.

Martinez is the squad's leading scorer at 10.8 points a game. Brown is second at 8.1 points.

Thursday night's winner advances to the semifinals and will face the winner of top-seed and host Rock Valley and No. 8-seed Elgin at noon Saturday.

The District A championship game is March 8 in Rockford and that winner advances to the NJCAA national championship, March 17-22 in Joplin, Mo.
